Hubbell House Studio

Hubbell House Studio

This was the most Gaudi-esque building there.

Architect: James Hubbell
Location: Santa Ysabel, CA

James Hubbell has been building and adding to his home on a hilltop outside of San Diego, CA for over 30 years. It's clearly inspired by Gaudi (and walking the grounds feels a lot like a mini Park Guell), among other influences. But Hubbell is a master of organic architecture and walking through his estate is a rare treat. It's open to the public every year on Fathers' Day.

This compound was almost destroyed in the Cedar Fire of 2003, but has now been almost entirely rebuilt.

Hubbell Trading Company

Hubbell Trading Company

2008 Local Food Festival and Field day at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House and Demonstration farm in Albuquerque's South Valley.
The historic Hubbell House was once home to the Hubbell Trading Company. I'm not sure if this was meant to be up at this event, or if it is being prepared for when the Hubbell House opens as a museum. I believe that this was the first time since renovation that the public has been invited into the house, and it is still mostly empty.

Infrared field

Infrared field

Semi-infrared digital shot of a field. Another one of my experiments using infrared filters on my Pentax KX. The R72 filter is only near infrared as it does allow some visible light through (although its extremely red).

I'd like to get an actual infrared filter for the full monty but they're a bit spendy.

Taken with a R72 filter.

  • a hard glossy mineral consisting of silicon dioxide in crystal form; present in most rocks (especially sandstone and granite); yellow sand is quartz with iron oxide impurities

  • A hard white or colorless mineral consisting of silicon dioxide, found widely in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. It is often colored by impurities (as in amethyst, citrine, and cairngorm)

Quartz with chlorite inclusions

Quartz with chlorite inclusions

This quartz crystal has an interesting pattern of internal conchoidal fractures that make it look "honeycombed." The rainbows along the fractures are set off against the darker background of chlorite inclusions on the back facet of the crystal. I got into a bidding war on eBay over this one.
